Bridging the Gap in Diabetes Diagnosis and Care

What is T3cDM? (Type 3c Diabetes)

Type 3c diabetes is a form of diabetes that results from damage to the pancreas due to conditions like:

  • Chronic pancreatitis – long-term inflammation leads to progressive loss of insulin-producing cells.

  • Acute pancreatic necrosis – severe inflammation can destroy endocrine tissue, sometimes even after a single episode.

  • Pancreatic cancer or surgery – can remove or destroy pancreatic tissue.
Unlike Type 1 or 2, T3cDM involves both impaired insulin secretion and digestive enzyme deficiency, requiring a dual treatment approach: insulin therapy and pancreatic enzyme replacement

Pathways to T3cDM: Not All Diabetes Is the Same

  • 🔥Acute Pancreatic Necrosis (APN)

    • Risk: 20–40% develop diabetes within 5 years of severe AP

    • Often missed because diabetes arises months or years later

  • 🌀 Chronic Pancreatitis

    • Risk: Up to 80% may develop diabetes over 25 years

    • Often mistaken for Type 2 due to similar symptoms

  • 🔪 Pancreatic Surgery / Cancer

    • Removal or destruction of pancreatic tissue directly impairs insulin production

If you’ve had any form of pancreatitis or pancreatic surgery, ask your doctor:     Could I have Type 3c Diabetes?

Our Goal

Educating Physicians:

Problem

Most healthcare providers aren’t trained to identify Type 3c diabetes.

Learn more about CME programs

Solution

We offer continuing medical education (CME), diagnostic guides, and clinical tools to help physicians recognize the unique characteristics of this form of diabetes—improving early diagnosis and patient outcomes.

Empowering Patients & Community:

Problem

9% of diabetes cases may be Type 3c, yet under 1% are correctly diagnosed.

Join the IM3c Movement

Solution

Through the IM3c movement, we invite patients, advocates, and doctors to raise awareness by asking one question: “Am I 3c?” From there, people get connected to resources, support, and advocacy tools.

Advancing Research:

Very little research funding is directed toward this condition. We fund and promote high-impact studies that explore new treatments and uncover the root mechanisms behind Type 3c diabetes.

For Physicians

Problem

Type 3c diabetes (T3cDM) is severely underdiagnosed and often mistaken for type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

Lack of awareness & tools and limited exposure in traditional medical education contribute to misdiagnosis.

Physicians may not have easy access to concise, up-to-date research and practical diagnostic tools related to T3cDM.

Solution

Self-Education: Access continuing medical education (CME) accredited resources designed to improve diagnostic accuracy.

Diagnostic Tools: Download checklists, flowcharts, and case studies to aid in identifying T3cDM.

Collaborative Research: Connect with leading researchers and contribute to real-world case reporting for further advancements.

Events & Symposiums:
Attend or view recorded webinars and conferences that offer deep dives into diagnosing and managing T3cDM..

Problem

Millions of people are living with misdiagnosed T3cDM, unaware they have a condition that requires a completely different treatment approach.

Misinformation and lack of public awareness lead to years of ineffective management and worsening health outcomes.

Patients and caregivers often feel isolated, confused, and unsupported.

Solution

Self-Education: Learn about T3cDM through simple, understandable articles, videos, and infographics.

Not all diabetes is the same—ask your doctor: Could it be Type 3c?:  Use our “Am I 3c?” self-assessment guide to help discuss your symptoms and concerns with your doctor.

Join IM3c Movement: Become a part of a growing community raising awareness, sharing experiences, and empowering each other.

Support & Advocacy:
Find patient support groups, participate in campaigns, and become an advocate for better diagnosis and treatment.

Driving Breakthroughs in Type 3c Diabetes

PERT is committed to driving research that deepens our understanding of Type 3c Diabetes and improves outcomes for those affected. Because this condition remains under-recognized, targeted research is essential—not only to improve diagnosis and treatment, but also to increase awareness in the medical community.

Our Research focus

1.

Understanding the Condition
Promoting studies that explore how pancreatic disease leads to diabetes and how it differs from Type 1 and Type 2

2.

Enhancing Treatment Promoting studies that explore how pancreatic disease leads to diabetes and how it differs from Type 1 and Type 2

3.

Enhancing Treatment Supporting efforts to find and refine treatment approaches tailored specifically to the unique needs of people with Type 3c diabetes.

4.

Prioritizing Real-Life Impact Backing research that centers on the lived experiences of patients—including quality of life, day-to-day management, and long-term health outcomes.
